My Journey to Better Health......The Very Early Days 1980s Part One

Where do I start?

Back in the early to mid eighties, I was a skinny, healthy 20 something mum to two children. By the late eighties I was several stone overweight and exhausted, unable to keep up the fitness regime I had got used to before going down with the viral infection that was knocking about a year or so earlier in 1986. I don't know if this is significant but my son, who was 5 in 1986 had the same virus at the same time I did and went on to be diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in December that year.

By the spring of 1988 I was getting my children to school on foot, then walking well over a mile to the leisure centre to swim a mile before getting back for the lunchtime school break. The afternoons were taken up with keep fit sessions  and housework then a break while I walked to collect the children again.

Just prior to the viral episode I weighed 10st and by the spring of 1988 I was 17st and totally wiped out. I had given up the swimming and the keep fit sessions and could only manage the minimum of household chores a slept every afternoon, waking unrefreshed and brain fogged in time to make the slow stroll to the school.
